The goal of this English class is to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are not only reading for comprehension but for meaning and relevancy of the work as a whole. Literature is also an example of good writing. The writing improves when a student reads. Vocabulary also improves because the student is learning to read in context. We want successful students who can think critically and communicate effectively.

Students have been introduced to the course requirements. This course requires a student to show improvement in standards which need to be strengthened. Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone through a variety of techniques and methods.

Beowulf - How are the qualities of the Anglo-Saxon hero represented?
- Are god and fate the same?
- How does the role of kinship manifest itself in the poem?
Students will begin the Hero unit. They will start with the Anglo Saxon time period by reading Beowulf. They will be asked to analyze the structure of the poem and interpret hero elements indicative of the culture. Students will also pre-read "The Coming of Beowulf", then pair and share, and prepare for whole class discussion. BNW Reading Assignment 4: Chapers 13-16 due on Thursday, October 10th.
