Week of 17 February and 24 February 2020

The goal of this English class is to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are not only reading for comprehension but for meaning and relevancy of the work as a whole. Literature is also an example of good writing. The writing improves when a student reads. Vocabulary also improves because the student is learning to read in context. We want successful students who can think critically and communicate effectively.

Honors English 12:  What is my moral philosophy and how have I come to terms with it?                                                     
                                    -How do society and the  people around me affect my morality?
      
 Lord of the Flies- What is an individual's responsibility to a community?
                            - How do actions of characters reveal their personalities?
                            - What does it mean to be civilized?
                            - When is the restriction of freedom a good thing?
                            - How do society's views and stereotypes affect a person's power?
                  
Vocabulary- How do I breakdown a word?
                    - How do I make connections for understanding?       

Writing-  How do I communicate clearly and effectively?
               - How do I edit my own writing?       
        
Students will identify and apply writing and grammar skills.  As a group, they will practice and share individual sentences that need to be edited from their abstracts.  Students will learn about applying active voice, sentence structure, organization, and communication.  They will be given time to review and edit their abstracts.  Students will upload their edited abstracts to Google Classroom.  Students will respond and analyze characters, setting, symbols, and theme of the allegorical novel.  They will apply Kohlberg's Theory of Morality, Maslow's Hierarchy, Freud's Id, Ego, and Superego, and pathos, ethos, and logos. Students will also be asked to respond to an analysis question.  Written response test next Friday after we cover correct format and organization of a comprehensive essay response.  Vocabulary Unit 3 should be completed by Tuesday, February 25th. A topic for their research project is due no later than Monday, February 24th.   



Broadcast Journalism:   How does what we know about the world shape our                                                                           perspectives?                                                                                   
                                                                  - How do I get ready for a LIVE broadcast?
                                                    - How do I prepare and script an interview?
                                                    - How do I create a PSA?
                                                    - How do I create a Facebook post?
                                                    - How do I utilize PremierePro?
                                                    - How do I take better photographs?
                                                    - How do I write captions?

Students will continue working as a team to get ready for daily live broadcasts.  Students will prepare scripts and equipment, collaborate, and create.  They will work on making sure that the Newscast progresses and improves.  All third MP assignments are due by March 13th.


Public Speaking:  What really matters?
                                            - How do basic speaking and listening skills help us to communicate?
                                            - How does a speaker adapt to an audience and their environment?
                                            - How do I gather, organize, and utilize valid research?

Students will be reading and responding to information found in the text to help them learn the importance of adapting to an audience and utilizing valid research. They will organize and outline their research for the Informative Speech. Students will utilize between 4 and 6 sources in their speech.  APA format is necessary.   Final outlines and hard-copies will be due on speech day.  Students will be tested on Chapters 4 and 7 on February 20th.  Chapter 6 test will be on the 25th and Chapter 8 will be due on February 28th.

Keystone Literature:  How can I improve myself?  What are my strengths and weaknesses?
       Critical thinking:           - How does my interaction with the text provoke thinking and response?
                                              - How do I analyze literature (fiction/nonfiction)
                                              - How do I write a literary analysis?
                                              - How do I identify and apply literary elements and devices?
                                              - How do I use vocabulary-in-context?
                                              - How do I identify a propaganda technique?
                                              - How do I identify and apply tone and purpose?
                                              -How do I give specific instructions?
                                              -How do I entertain and motivate a peer?

Students have been introduced to the course requirements.  This course requires a student to show improvement in standards that need to be strengthened.  Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone.  This week, students have been asked to complete a sample test with a written response,  complete a Study Island, analyze a newspaper article, and to identify and apply a Keystone skill.

Beowulf: Why do we still study Beowulf?
                                     -What are the elements of an epic?
                                     -How do writers show us what characters are like in their literature without   
                                                   telling us directly (implication)? 
                                     -What can we infer about a character based on the clues given to us by the 
                                                   author (educated guess)? 
                                     -How do writers use literary devices to create an epic story?
                                     -How does culture influence literature?
                                     -How did the time period affect the epic story?
                                     -How do I create a modern comic book using an Old English hero?
                                     -How do I use Photoshop?

Students will analyze the epic by identifying the epic elements and the elements of the Anglo-Saxon culture.  Students will make connections to current hero stories (super hero, Byronic hero, epic hero). They will be asked to gather photos/pictures to create Comic books.  Students will work with the Art department, who will help us with photography and Photoshop.  The comic books will be produced from a variety of mediums.  Students will work in pairs.  A list of requirements and a rubric will be provided.

Tuesday, February 18th is test day for Chapter 5.  Speeches will commence on Thursday, February 13th.

Speech topics are due in February.  Speech Outline Drafts due no later than February 7th. Speeches will commence on Monday, February 10th.  Students will view and read samples of Introductory speeches to help with the critiquing process.  Chapter 3 will be due on Friday, January 31st with a quiz on Monday, February 3rd.  Chapter 5 will be due on Thursday, February 6th with a quiz on Friday, February 7th.
