Week of 27 January 2020

The goal of this English class is to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are not only reading for comprehension but for meaning and relevancy of the work as a whole. Literature is also an example of good writing. The writing improves when a student reads. Vocabulary also improves because the student is learning to read in context. We want successful students who can think critically and communicate effectively.

Honors English 12:  What is my moral philosophy and how have I come to terms with it?                                                     
                                    -How do society and the  people around me affect my morality?
      
 Lord of the Flies- What is an individual's responsibility to a community?
                            - How do actions of characters reveal their personalities?
                            - What does it mean to be civilized?
                            - When is the restriction of freedom a good thing?
                            - How do society's views and stereotypes affect a person's power?
                  
Vocabulary- How do I breakdown a word?
                    - How do I make connections for understanding?              
        
Lord of the Flies (LOTF) Reading Assignment 1 will be due on Tuesday.  Students will respond and analyze characters, setting, symbols, and message.  They will apply Kohlberg's Theory of Morality, Maslow's Hierarchy, Freud's Id, Ego, and Superego, and pathos, ethos, and logos. Students will also be asked to respond to an analysis question.  Vocabulary Unit 1 should be completed by Monday, January 27th. Vocabulary Unit 2 should be completed for Monday, February 3rd.



Broadcast Journalism:   How does what we know about the world shape our                                                                           perspectives?                                                                                   
                                                                  - How do I get ready for a LIVE broadcast?
                                                    - How do I prepare and script an interview?
                                                    - How do I create a PSA?
                                                    - How do I create a Facebook post?
                                                    - How do I utilize PremierePro?
                                                    - How do I take better photographs?
                                                    - How do I write captions?

Students will continue working as a team to get ready for daily live broadcasts.  Students will prepare scripts and equipment, collaborate, and create.  They will work on making sure that the Newscast progresses and improves.  All third MP assignments are due by March13th.


Public Speaking:  What really matters?
                                            - How do basic speaking and listening skills help us to communicate?
                                            - Why do I get nervous?

Students will be reading and responding to information found in the text to help them learn the importance of both listening and speaking skills when writing a speech.  The application of information will aid with the writing of their Introductory Speech. Speech topics are due in February.  Speech Outline Drafts due on February7th. Students will view and read samples of Introductory speeches to help with the critiquing process.  Chapter 2 will be due on Tuesday, January 28th with a quiz on January 29th.

Keystone Literature:  How can I improve myself?  What are my strengths and weaknesses?
       Critical thinking:           - How does my interaction with the text provoke thinking and response?
                                              - How do I analyze literature (fiction/nonfiction)
                                              - How do I write a literary analysis?
                                              - How do I identify and apply literary elements and devices?
                                              - How do I use vocabulary-in-context?
                                              - How do I identify a propaganda technique?
                                              - How do I identify and apply tone and purpose?
                                              -How do I give specific instructions?
                                              -How do I entertain and motivate a peer?

Students have been introduced to the course requirements.  This course requires a student to show improvement in standards that need to be strengthened.  Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone.  Students are required to complete a Study Island assessment based on their weaknesses.  This week, students have been asked to take a Diagnostic Test.  They are also asked to analyze a newspaper article, and to identify and apply a Keystone skill.  A novel response and/or a sample test may also be required.

Beowulf: Why do we still study Beowulf?
                                     -What are the elements of an epic?
                                     -How do writers show us what characters are like in their literature without   
                                                   telling us directly (implication)? 
                                     -What can we infer about a character based on the clues given to us by the 
                                                   author (educated guess)? 
                                     -How do writers use literary devices to create an epic story?

                                     -How did the time period affect the epic story?
                                    - Based on our inferences, how would this character participate in modern 
                                                   social media?
                                    -How do I use Photoshop?

Students will begin the Hero unit.  They will start with the Anglo Saxon time period by reading Beowulf.  They will be asked to analyze the structure of the poem and interpret hero elements indicative of the culture.  Students will create profile blogs and conversations for their assigned character.  They will demonstrate knowledge of character, relationships, plot, literary elements, and culture while applying it to a 21st century application.

Students will work in pairs to create presentations to teach Macbeth.  Students are required to read and respond to the whole play.  They will have several days to work with their partner.  When they return from Christmas break, they will teach and present the assigned Act to the class. Students will need to create Google slide presentations.  Student pairs will be given questions and literary devices on which to focus.  The class will be given Act tests after each one is taught.  BNW documentaries will be completed.  Lord of the Flies (LOTF) will be introduced and assigned.

Students will be required to publish a hard copy of their speech with APA reference page,  produce podium cards, and create Google Slideshows (printed 3 on  page with note sections) by the first day of presentations on Monday, January 6th. Students have been given a Persuasive Speech Preparation handout that will need to be handed in when their final hard copy is due.  Students will complete the MLK critique (January 14th).  Students will read and respond to Chapter 19 (due January 15th).

Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone through a variety of techniques and methods.  Students have been  working on the Board Game project.  They are working in pairs/groups.  Students are applying reading skills to create a game that will motivate and teach others how to identify and apply literary devices, tone and purpose, propaganda techniques, vocabulary-in-context, fiction and nonfiction elements, and written response elements.  They will create game pieces using the 3D printer, write instructions, create a game board. Students will play each other's games and critique the game.

Semester 2 Beginning January 16th
Students have been introduced to the course requirements.  This course requires a student to show improvement in standards that need to be strengthened.  Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone.
