Week of 16 December 2019

The goal of this English class is to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are not only reading for comprehension but for meaning and relevancy of the work as a whole. Literature is also an example of good writing. The writing improves when a student reads. Vocabulary also improves because the student is learning to read in context. We want successful students who can think critically and communicate effectively. 


Enjoy the break!  Return in 2020 with the motivation to meet every academic challenge that presents itself to you. Be teachable.  Be creative.  Be a problem-solver.

Honors English 12:  What is my moral philosophy and how have I come to terms with it?                                                     
                                    -How do society and the  people around me affect my morality?
      
      Macbeth- Ultimately, are we responsible for the outcomes of our own lives or are there certain
circumstances that lie beyond our control?
                      -How does power corrupt?
                     -How does one define a person's self worth?
                     -What are the social constructions of gender? 
                     - How did the Renaissance audiences’ belief in the supernatural affect the theme of fate
                         versus determinism? 
                     -What are the elements of the tragedy?
                  
      Brave New World -How is classic literature relevant?
                                    -How do I create a documentary?
                                               -Who is my audience?
                                               -What is my perspective?
                                               -How do I use PremierePro?
                                               -How do I  use  valid sources?
                                                         -How do I use APA?
                                               -How do I use a variety of mediums to share my perspective?   
                                               -How do I collaborate with my peers?
                                               -How do I organize my information?              
        
As a group, students  will edit their BNW documentaries. Individually, students will produce APA Abstracts necessary for each source.  They will also create a reference page.  Students will work in pairs to create presentations to teach Macbeth.  Students are required to read and respond to the whole play.  They will have several days to work with their partner.  When they return from Christmas break, they will teach and present the assigned Act to the class. Students will need to create Google slide presentations.  Student pairs will be given questions and literary devices on which to focus.  The class will be given Act tests after each one is taught.  



Broadcast Journalism:   How does what we know about the world shape our                                                                           perspectives?                                                                                   
                                                                  - How do I get ready for a LIVE broadcast?
                                                    - How do I prepare and script an interview?
                                                    - How do I create a PSA?
                                                    - How do I create a Facebook post?
                                                    - How do I utilize PremierePro?
                                                    - How do I take better photographs?
                                                    - How do I write captions?

Students will continue working as a team to get ready for daily live broadcasts.  Students will prepare scripts and equipment, collaborate, and create.  They will work on making sure that the Newscast progresses and improves.  All second MP assignments are due by December 20th.


Public Speaking:  What really matters?
                                     - How do I reach an audience?
                                    - How do I become an effective listener?
                                    - How do I evaluate a speech?
                                    - How do I appeal and motivate my audience?

Students will be required to publish a hard copy of their speech with APA reference page,  produce podium cards, and create Google Slideshows (printed 3 on  page with note sections) by the first day of presentations on Thursday, January 3rd. Students have been given a Persuasive Speech Preparation handout that will need to be handed in when their final hard copy is due.  

Keystone Literature:  How can I improve myself?  What are my strengths and weaknesses?
       Critical thinking:           - How does my interaction with the text provoke thinking and response?
                                              - How do I analyze literature (fiction/nonfiction)
                                              - How do I write a literary analysis?
                                              - How do I identify and apply literary elements and devices?
                                              - How do I use vocabulary-in-context?
                                              - How do I identify a propaganda technique?
                                              - How do I identify and apply tone and purpose?
                                              -How do I give specific instructions?
                                              -How do I entertain and motivate a peer?

Students have been introduced to the course requirements.  This course requires a student to show improvement in standards which need to be strengthened.  Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone through a variety of techniques and methods.  Students have been  working on the Board Game project.  They are working in pairs/groups.  Students are applying reading skills to create a game that will motivate and teach others how to identify and apply literary devices, tone and purpose, propaganda techniques, vocabulary-in-context, fiction and nonfiction elements, and written response elements.  They will create game pieces using the 3D printer, write instructions, create a game board and box. Students will play each other's games and critique the game.

Students  will continue their research and production on the BNW documentaries.  They will need to complete Storyboards.  Students will create videos.  They will find valid sources.  Students will produce Abstracts for each source.  They will create a reference page.  Students will begin reading and analyzing Macbeth in the next week and a half.  Student pairs have been assigned an Act that they will be required to teach.  Students are required to read and respond to the play.  They will have several days to work with their partner.  When they return from Christmas break, they will teach and present the assigned Act to the class. Students will need to create Google slide presentations.  Student pairs will be given questions and literary devices on which to focus.  The class will be given Act tests after each one is taught.

Students will read and respond to Chapter 17.  They will take a test on December 6th.  Students will complete worksheets on the Persuasive Speech.  They will identify logical fallacies and statements on fact, value and policy.  These 2 worksheets will be due by Friday, December 6th.  Students have been given a Persuasive Speech Preparation handout that will need to be handed in when their final hard copy is due.  Students will be researching topics and validating sources.
