The goal of this English class is to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are not only reading for comprehension but for meaning and relevancy of the work as a whole. Literature is also an example of good writing. The writing improves when a student reads. Vocabulary also improves because the student is learning to read in context. We want successful students who can think critically and communicate effectively. 

Enjoy the break!  Return in 2020 with the motivation to meet every academic challenge that presents itself to you. Be teachable.  Be creative.  Be a problem-solver.

As a group, students  will edit their BNW documentaries. Individually, students will produce APA Abstracts necessary for each source.  They will also create a reference page.  Students will work in pairs to create presentations to teach Macbeth.  Students are required to read and respond to the whole play.  They will have several days to work with their partner.  When they return from Christmas break, they will teach and present the assigned Act to the class. Students will need to create Google slide presentations.  Student pairs will be given questions and literary devices on which to focus.  The class will be given Act tests after each one is taught.  

Broadcast Journalism:   How does what we know about the world shape our                                                                           perspectives?                                                                                   
                                                                  - How do I get ready for a LIVE broadcast?
                                                    - How do I prepare and script an interview?
                                                    - How do I create a PSA?
                                                    - How do I create a Facebook post?

Students will continue working as a team to get ready for daily live broadcasts.  Students will prepare scripts and equipment, collaborate, and create.  They will work on making sure that the Newscast progresses and improves.  All second MP assignments are due by December 20th.

Public Speaking:  What really matters?
                                     - How do I reach an audience?
                                    - How do I become an effective listener?
                                    - How do I evaluate a speech?
                                    - How do I appeal and motivate my audience?

Students will be required to publish a hard copy of their speech with APA reference page,  produce podium cards, and create Google Slideshows (printed 3 on  page with note sections) by the first day of presentations on Thursday, January 3rd. Students have been given a Persuasive Speech Preparation handout that will need to be handed in when their final hard copy is due.

Students have been introduced to the course requirements.  This course requires a student to show improvement in standards which need to be strengthened.  Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone through a variety of techniques and methods.  Students have been  working on the Board Game project.  They are working in pairs/groups.  Students are applying reading skills to create a game that will motivate and teach others how to identify and apply literary devices, tone and purpose, propaganda techniques, vocabulary-in-context, fiction and nonfiction elements, and written response elements.  They will create game pieces using the 3D printer, write instructions, create a game board and box. Students will play each other's games and critique the game.

Students will read and respond to Chapter 17.  They will take a test on December 6th.  Students will complete worksheets on the Persuasive Speech.  They will identify logical fallacies and statements on fact, value and policy.  These 2 worksheets will be due by Friday, December 6th.  Students have been given a Persuasive Speech Preparation handout that will need to be handed in when their final hard copy is due.  Students will be researching topics and validating sources.

Students will be viewing a live stage production of Macbeth on Thursday, November 21st.  In order to prepare, we will go over the life and times of Shakespeare and review the plot of the play.  On Wednesday and Friday, students will continue work on their group projects.  They will continue their research and production on the BNW documentaries.  Students will begin reading and analyzing Macbeth next week.  They will divide time in between the production of their films and the analysis of the tragedy.

Students have begun the Documentary Project week.  Students will be working in two groups to complete a 2 Part documentary demonstrating the relevancy of Brave New World. They have been given the requirements and the Rubric to complete the project.  Students will be required to complete a task each day for their group and research a variety of mediums to use in their project.  Students are encouraged to create their own photos and video to use in their documentary.  Final edited APA reference and Abstract are due by Friday and need to be  printed.  Students will need to complete an APA reference page for their video.
