Week of 30 September 2019

The goal of this English class is to produce critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students are not only reading for comprehension but for meaning and relevancy of the work as a whole. Literature is also an example of good writing. The writing improves when a student reads. Vocabulary also improves because the student is learning to read in context. We want successful students who can think critically and communicate effectively.

Honors English 12:  What is my moral philosophy and how have I come to terms with it?        
                                              -How do society and the  people around me affect my morality? 
                                    -How are heroes created?     
           Brave New World  -What is a tragic hero?  
                                               -How do Satires affect society?  What is a utopia/dystopia?  How are allusions used?   
                                                -Who is ultimately responsible for the future?  -How is technology dangerous?
                            Beowulf    - How are the qualities of the Anglo-Saxon hero represented?   
                                                -Are god and fate the same?       
                                                 -How does the role of kinship manifest itself in the poem?   

Students will begin the Hero unit.  They will start with the Anglo Saxon time period by reading Beowulf.  They will be asked to analyze the structure of the poem and interpret hero elements indicative of the culture. Students will also begin their independent reading assignments, pair and share, and prepare for whole class discussion.  BNW Reading Assignment 3:  Chapers 10-12 due on Monday, October 7th.

Broadcast Journalism:   How does what we know about the world shape our                                                                           perspectives?                                                                                   
                                                                  - How do I get ready for a LIVE broadcast?
                                                    -How do I prepare and script an interview?
                                                    -How do I create a PSA?
                                                    -How do I create a Facebook post?
                                                    -How do I utilize PremierePro?

Students will continue working as a team to get ready for daily live broadcasts.  Students will prepare scripts and equipment, collaborate, and create.  They will work on making sure that the Newscast progresses and improves.

Public Speaking:  What really matters?
                                    - How do basic speaking and listening skills help us to communicate?
                                    - Why do I get nervous?

Students will be reading and responding to information found in the text to help them learn the importance of both listening and speaking skills when writing a speech. Conferencing of outlines has been completed for those students who have submitted them.  Students should be writing their Final Speech drafts.  Students will write their podium cards and rehearse speeches.  Final Speech Drafts are due no later than Friday, October 4th.  Speech presentations will commence on October 7th.

Keystone Literature:  How can I improve myself?  

                                              -How does my interaction with the text provoke thinking and response?
                                              - What are my strengths and weaknesses?

Students have been introduced to the course requirements.  This course requires a student to show improvement in standards which need to be strengthened.  Every student will focus and work on improving their reading and writing skills for success on the Keystone through a variety of techniques and methods.

Students will complete the publication of their children's books. They will identify the message/meaning for a specific audience, utilize plotline, use dialogue, apply literary elements and literary devices, and pay attention to detail.  Students will pitch an idea, create a publishing company, draft a book, discuss revisions, edit, and publish a children's book.  The Elements of a Children's Book Handout and the Rubric can be found on Google Classroom.  Students will begin the Hero unit.  They will start with the Anglo Saxon time period by reading Beowulf.  They will be asked to analyze the structure of the poem and interpret hero elements indicative of the culture. Students will also begin their independent reading assignments.  They will be assigned Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Students will be given a study guide to help prepare them for Discussion days on Fridays.

Chapter 7 quiz on September 20th.

They will identify the message/meaning for a specific audience, utilize plotline, use dialogue, apply literary elements and literary devices, and pay attention to detail.  Students will pitch an idea, create a publishing company, draft a book, discuss revisions, edit, and publish a children's book.  The Elements of a Children's Book Handout and the Rubric can be found on Google Classroom.

Chapter 3 quiz on September 13th.

Speech topics are due on September 5th.  Speech Outline Drafts due on September 9th. Students will view and read samples of Introductory speeches to help with the critiquing process.  Chapter 2 will be due on Friday, September 6th with a quiz on September 9th.
